What is Humanist Chaplaincy?
Life’s significant moments – the loss of a loved one, experiencing trauma or systemic oppression, or entering a new chapter such as a birth, a relationship, or a challenging transition – often raise existential questions: How do I move forward? What truly matters? Who do I want to become?
As a humanist chaplain, I support people in navigating existential questions, especially during times of grief, trauma, or uncertainty. I’ve seen how a safe and empathetic environment can help restore clarity and direction when life feels off balance. My aim is to offer space for reflection and to support your own capacity for meaning-making, self-understanding, and growth. Together, we explore your values, identity, and what truly matters to you.
I work from the understanding that our experiences are shaped by both our inner vulnerability and the broader social and cultural dynamics we live within. Humanist counseling can offer space to explore how these forces impact our ways of being. By fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect, I support clients in connecting with existential experiences and seeking deeper meaning.
My approach is grounded in humanistic values and shaped by encounters with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. I aim to create a space where complex questions about identity, belonging, and the tension between personal freedom and cultural expectations can be held with care. Whether you are dealing with displacement—literal or emotional—or wrestling with what it means to belong (in a body, a family, a community, a belief system), I am here to meet you where you are.

About me
I’m Nina, a Berlin-based humanist spiritual caregiver originally from Amsterdam.
As a humanist counselor and spiritual caregiver, I guide clients through spiritual, ethical, and existential questions.
In my practice I support individuals navigating questions of life and meaning, experiences of loss, and the impact of injustice. My approach is warm, socio-politically engaged and focussed on navigating questions of meaning.
During my psychology studies, I realized that some of my deeper questions remained unanswered. While I learned to analyze human behavior, I continued searching for ways to explore the existential questions I had about life. Questions like: How do we navigate grief, migration, illness, or the meaning of friendship? How do we relate to societal issues, such as not fitting into the normative ideas of society based on sexuality, gender, culture, or religion?
When I discovered the profession of humanist chaplaincy, I felt deeply inspired and passionate about finding a way to offer counseling that explores the deeper spiritual, ethical, and meaning-making questions we are confronted with. I believe that counseling is a space for self-exploration and liberation, as much as it is a place for empowerment and resistance.
The most valuable perspectives I bring to my work are grounded in social justice, feminist, and decolonial theories. Exploring ourselves through multiple dimensions—our lived experience, and the social, spiritual, existential, political, and cultural contexts we inhabit—can help us navigate the complex questions that arise from being human.
In my work, I’ve supported people through experiences of grief, trauma, sexual violence, and questions of consent. I have experience in providing trauma-informed care, particularly for survivors of sexual violence.
I’ve also worked in the field of migration, and have accompanied many queer individuals navigating existential questions around sexuality and gender identity.
In my practice it is my aim to make people feel seen, safe, and empowered. This includes a good portion of humor, open mindedness and unconditional acceptance.
